Introduction of Remote Education

Distance learning, which is also referred to as remote learning or e-learning, is quite relevant in the current world. Remote education can also be categorised as a new approach to learning that has come with the introduction of technology in the teaching and learning processes. Remote education has been existing for decades, however, the COVID-19 pandemic forced social distancing measures leading to its increased usage globally.

  • Evolution of Remote Education

Remote education dates back to the early 1800s where students had to receive course materials and assignments by mail correspondence. The first form of technology facilitated distant learning was in the 1920s where education was being broadcasted using radio and television. Indeed, with the developments in the methods of communication and the expansion of telecommunications, remote education became more popular across the twentieth century. Technological advancements such as the internet and multimedia enhanced remote education through increased access to online course content and virtual classes. Presently, remote learning is achieved by the use of learning management systems, video conferencing, emulation of lab practicals and other means. The availability and versatility witnessed through the innovations in IT has enable immense growth and even acceptation of remote education.

  • Benefits of Remote Education

Here are some advantages of remote education when compared to the conventional face-to-face teaching: Some of the major advantages are:Some of the major advantages are:

– Accessibility: This removes geographical barriers and offers education to children in remote regions and those who cannot physically attend schools/colleges because of disability or other reasons.

– Convenience and Flexibility: Studying can be done at any time and any place because the material like study notes, recorded lectures, etc., can be accessed at appropriate times. This makes it easy for one to balance between their education and other activities or responsibilities.

– Cost Savings: There are no costs on travel, accommodation, etc for the educational institution as well as students in remote education. Another advantage of using online resources is the aspect of cost.

– Enhanced Learning: Educational technologies enable the remote learners to pause, rewind and review the lectures severally to improve understanding and mastery in their own time.

– Continuity: Remote education enables continuous education delivery during disruptions such as pandemics, natural disasters, among other circumstances that may hinder face-to-face classroom learning.

– Updated Content: Flexibility in the delivery of content favours regular curriculum revisions and access to the latest study materials through remote learning.

  • Challenges in Remote Education

However, just like any other form of learning that has been implemented over the years, there are some challenges that have been realized as follows. Some key issues include:

– Digital Divide: Some students in rural and underdeveloped regions cannot engage in remote education due to the unavailability of devices, the internet, electricity, etc.

– Lack of social interactions: The limitation of informal face-to-face communication with other learners as provided by traditional face-to-face teaching style.

– Technical difficulties: Lack of internet connection, software/hardware complications such as server crashes may hinder learning and reduce the morale of students.

– Learner motivation and engagement: Learner autonomy and no check by teachers, proactivity may challenge learner motivation leading to abandonment of courses and dropouts.

– Authentic assessments: Other difficult areas of sustaining integrity include conducting unsupervised examinations and getting genuine feedback from the students.

  • The Future of Remote Education

Although the adoption spiked during the COVID-19 outbreak, remote education is likely to remain dominant due to technological growth such as 5G, virtual reality simulators, artificial intelligence tutors, among others, and digitization. Policy makers and organisations are spending to ensure that the digital gap is closed through rural internet connection initiatives. Learners are being engaged through the application of game elements and data analytics is being applied on the platforms. It is for this reason that various regulatory bodies are putting in place sound authentication systems for remote examinations.

Due to its advantages and relative availability, learning without time and space boundaries is ready to be a part of the educational process as an addition to classical, face-to-face instruction. Continuous and sustainable education delivery models will be created through the integration of the physical and virtual learning spaces. But as technological barriers cease to exist and as issues to do with engagement, assessment and divide receive solutions – learners across the globe will be in a position to access quality education, anytime, anywhere.

  • Conclusion

Remote education has come a long way from its mere correspondence course roots to become one of the most powerful enablers, that is, breaking geographical barriers and bringing education to the masses. On the other hand, adoption was on the rise especially during the pandemic while remote education was on course in terms of acceleration through technology. When platforms will turn into the set of integrated simulated environments combined with the personalized learning based on data – remote education will be the norm. Due to these strengths, accessibility, flexibility, and continuity, remote education will adopt a blended classroom approach where teaching and learning processes will be supplemental and complemented by virtual learning.
